Kingdom photography book designed by Micah Purnell featuring French fold pages, premium materials and editorial design for AJ Wilkinson and HebTroCo.

Kingdom is a photography publication created in collaboration with photographer AJ Wilkinson and British clothing manufacturer HebTroCo.

The project began following the cancellation of AJ’s MFA degree exhibition during the Covid-19 pandemic. Rather than allowing the work to remain unseen, the decision was made to develop a limited-edition publication that could give the project a new audience and a lasting physical form.

The book explores ideas of masculinity, identity and vulnerability through a series of portraits of motorcycle riders and custom bike builders. While the subjects are often associated with toughness and self-reliance, AJ’s photographs focus on quieter moments where those public identities begin to soften and more personal characteristics emerge.

This tension between what is visible and what remains concealed became central to the design concept. To support the narrative, a series of French folds were incorporated into the publication, creating hidden sections within the book containing AJ's research material and photographic workings. These concealed pages echoed the themes of the project itself, allowing content to remain partially visible while requiring a deliberate act of discovery by the reader.

Particular attention was given to materials, paper stocks and production methods. Premium papers from G.F. Smith and Fedrigoni were selected and produced in collaboration with Pressision to create a tactile and carefully crafted object that rewarded slow engagement.

The result is a publication in which concept, content and production work together, extending the themes of the photography beyond the images themselves and into the physical experience of reading the book.

“I was in discussion with a local clothing company about creating a small-run publication of the work Kingdom. This is where Micah came into the picture. Knowing Micah and his brilliant knowledge of graphic design, there was no question I would use anyone else. The product he produced was beautiful, hit all the nails on the head and gave the work another voice.”
