Against the Odds public art installation by Micah Purnell on the Spanish Steps at Wembley Park, London during Euro 2020.

“The work follows on from a body of work I produced during lockdown around the theme of community. All communities had been taken from people, so we had to find it somewhere else — closer to home. But I saw so many acts of kindness and connection, from a heartfelt nod at a park gate to live music played for elderly neighbours who had never met before. The difficulty of Covid, in some way, shone a light on local humanity, and I felt this piece’s Bobby Moore Bridge location was the perfect place to remind locals and visitors of the strength of togetherness.”

Public Art installation at Wembley Park, Wembley Stadium, London, UK

Large-scale typographic artwork installed on the Spanish Steps leading to Wembley Stadium in London.

Power in Unity

Following a successful proposal to Wembley Park, I was commissioned to create a large-scale public artwork for the Spanish Steps leading to Wembley Stadium during the Euro 2020 tournament.

Installed across one of the most prominent pedestrian routes in the area, the work was designed to welcome thousands of visitors arriving at the stadium while reflecting themes of unity, belonging and collective experience.

The artwork, titled Power in Unity, explored the idea that our greatest achievements are often realised together rather than alone. Using bold typography and vibrant colour, the installation transformed the Spanish Steps into a large-scale public statement celebrating connection, diversity and shared purpose.

Designed to operate at an architectural scale, the work needed to remain visually striking from a distance while rewarding closer engagement as visitors moved through the space. The installation became part of Wembley Park's wider public art programme and formed a backdrop to one of the most significant sporting events in recent history.

Situated at the heart of Wembley Park, the project demonstrates how typography and public space can be combined to create accessible, optimistic and memorable civic experiences.
